A SPRING IN MY STEP!

Last Sunday afternoon, there was a welcome change in the weather.....and the sun shone!  It may be raining now here today, but those precious rays and dare I say 'warmth', put a definite spring in my step!

As we walked our dogs through the woods, bordering our land, we spied this little fellow peeping through the fencing at us from the neighbouring field.  Barely a couple of days old, but already inquisitive and independent having strayed away from his mother to see who we were.

Suddenly 'Mum' was there, glaring at us.....she was
decidedly unhappy with our presence and was very vocal about it too.....her protective maternal instinct towards her baby.

With the threat of attack from foxes at this time of year, our Sheep live a nervous existence, trying to protect their newborn lambs.
I was fascinated to see on the BBC online news this morning, that some farmers here in the UK are following an Australian trend, to use Alpacas to protect their lambs.  Standing up to five feet tall, with strong guarding instincts, they have proved to be successful guards against foxes.  When in groups, they will surround a fox
and frighten them away.

For more on this story, do press on this
BBC News link, and read about and see footage of these gorgeous creatures.......their affection towards the lambs is also so heartwarming!

Our woods were dotted with Primroses, and delicate white wild Anemones......the green shoots of Bluebells have started carpeting the ground, waiting to burst in to a sea of blue.....the very essence of Springtime.

Back home, we worked on a new garden project in the sunshine......creating two large box edged beds at the back of our lawn, to contain a gravelled area with lines of 'pleached hornbeam' in front of a hedge behind.  Very early days..... but it should hopefully all make sense in a year or two when things have matured!

'Rocco' our Labrador enjoyed the Spring sunshine too.......

I hope you too have been enjoying a little bit of
Spring sunshine?

Have a happy Tuesday!

  3. I love all your SPRING photos here! How very interesting that alpacas can guard sheep. My children love the occasional alpaca sighting in local fields.

I have long wanted a pleached hedge and wrote about pleaching a year or so ago on my blog. It is not common in the United States but is gradually catching on. Last fall, I planted two pear tree whips for pleaching along a fence that faces the neighborhood street. I was so excited to see that you have started a pleached hedge and will look forward to following their progress!
